Tewkesbury: A Charming Village With A Rosy History (2023)

Rivers meet in town, Tewkesbury’s ancient beauty, history lives on

Nestled in the heart of England, the Cotswolds is a region of rolling hills, picturesque villages, and stunning natural beauty. Known for its charming stone cottages, historic churches, and quaint tea rooms, the Cotswolds is a popular destination for visitors from around the world.

With significant history in the War of the Roses, Tewkesbury is a busy transport route connecting London with Cheltenham, Gloucester and Worcester, making it an ideal base for exploring the Cotswolds (an area designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966) and beyond.

Many of Tewkesbury’s buildings have been listed for their outstanding architectural and historic value and its abbey is an outstanding example of Decorated Gothic, with its tall Romanesque circular archivolts and medieval stained glass.

Worth seeing are the two sculptures to mark the site of one battle in the War of the Roses and located on and near the Stonehill roundabout. For more information, check out the Tewksbury Battlefield Society website.

Explore the town’s stunning architecture, with many tall buildings listed as having remarkable architectural and historic importance. Many of these can be found along High Street, which features several noteworthy medieval structures.

St. Mary’s Lane car park (next to the River Avon) offers access to a riverside walk and there is another outside Tewkesbury Abbey.

Heathrow Airport to Tewkesbury is about 1 hour 40 minutes by car.

If you are without a car, there are regular buses to nearby towns and cities; Cheltenham Spa and Gloucester train stations are within easy walking distance of each other. Check out our taxi services and private hire guide here.
