Originally designed by J. H. Turner, the first nine holes opened for play in May 1936 and the second nine holes were completed a year later. During World War II, the second nine fairways were used for growing crops before being reinstated in 1949.

Another excellent golf course is the Minchinhampton Golf Club, founded in 1889, which has three courses, namely The Avening Course (opened in 1975) and The Cherington Course (1995) and The Old Course (no bunkers, sometimes cows), offering stunning views.

The Avening and Cherington are Championship Courses regularly host National Championships and county events, and visitor green fees start at £65.00.
