Birdlip: A Village Soar-ing with Beauty and History (2023)

Birdlip

Birdlip in the Cotswolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and known for several historic landmarks, including some remarkable pre-Roman bronze art from around AD50.

This is a picturesque village nestled at the base of England’s historic Malvern Hills and Severn Valley valleys, and an ideal destination for those seeking stunning views or exciting outdoor activities in or nearby.

The village used to be on the main road between Cirencester and Gloucester before a bypass was built, directing traffic away from Birdlip and is near the famous Air Balloon Roundabout, which marks the highest point on the A417 road.

Here used to be the Air Balloon Pub until it was forced to close in 2022 to make way for a new road alignment scheme designed to relieve a traffic bottleneck. This is a shame because this pub opened in 1784 and was likely named after one of the first British balloon flights by Dr Edward Jenner from Berkeley Castle to Kingscote before landing in a field in Birdlip. Another interesting fact about this pub is the landlord was brewing beer on-site as early as 1856!

By the way, this is the same Dr Edward Jenner who created the smallpox vaccine! Dr Jenner’s house is now a museum in Berkeley and even has the world’s first vaccination clinic still on the property. For more information, visit www.jennermuseum.com
