Avening: Stunning Views Across Rolling Hills (2023)

Avening, a picturesque Cotswold (designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966) village, is a popular tourist destination because of its stunning landscape and fascinating heritage.

Avening is a picturesque village with plenty of pubs and restaurants, making it an ideal starting point to explore other Cotswold towns.

Renowned for its bizarre history, Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, built a church in 1080 and to commemorate her consecration, gave the builders an annual feast celebrating pig’s heads – now celebrated locally as Pig Face Day.

Visitors can visit Westonbirt Arboretum, which boasts an impressive tree collection as well as hosting many events throughout the year.

From Heathrow Airport, it takes around 1 hour fifty minutes to get to Avening by car.

The Cotswolds is a paradise for walkers, with its rolling hills, picturesque villages, and stunning natural landscapes providing the perfect backdrop for a walking holiday.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, the Cotswolds offers a range of walking routes to suit all abilities.

Take a look at these other villages: Blockley, Bagendon, and Compton Abdale.
